Love it. I made yogurt all across the Indian Ocean. It became our tasty treat instead of ice cream which is impractical on a 45 foot boat. We used a kit we bought from Costco. You would mix it and drop it in an insulated thermos. I did make it from scratch a few times but the kit came in a bunch of cool flavors so we continued using it.

I recently started making bread using Greek yogurt and self rising flour. Also you can exchange cottage cheese for the yogurt. It’s a high protein option for making bread. I’ve made savory and sweet breads and it only takes about 30 minutes from start to finish. I was surprised how easy it was and how good the bread tasted.

I love reading about your life on board and how you deal with food and cooking. Thank you for the recipe! After my failed experiments with making kombucha, I don’t have a lot of confidence in myself, but I may give this a try one day. Not any time soon however because I’m in Holland dairyland.

If I was in Holland dairyland I wouldn’t make yogurt either. I’d just eat amazing Dutch cheese till I passed out. hahahaha

Thanks Claire! I appreciate that you like my food stories. It’s a big part of my life here in the middle of nowhere - one of the things that keeps life interesting.

I won't get a chance to try the recipe out until September since I'm leaving for a month and a half of traveling. But as soon as I get back!

Thank you!!!!

We’ve had some big yoghurt searches on this trip! And it can be a challenge to find stuff that’s not full of sugar and other crap. I’ve always thought about making it but never got round to it. Well done you.

Linda Jackson 🌏's avatar

I'm going to post the recipe and process this week Paula. It's so easy, you could easily make it in Ivy!

I'd love the recipe, too! I love learning to make things feom scratch. πŸ˜„

I'll be sure to let you know when I put the recipe up Angie.

What is a cheese starter? I'm also a cheese freak and starting to stress about no cheese on the horizon.

Janice Anne Wheeler's avatar

I also have a starter more like dried yeast that can be utilized for yogurt. I'm such a cheese freak that I carry those starters as well. Admittedly, I haven't made my own since I had access to fresh whole milk in Colorado; now bags of dried milk are at the ready. What fun. It's not new, it's rediscovering the basics. Happy packing! J

Hi J! I put a reply in the wrong place... What is a cheese starter? I'm stressing about no cheese, also a cheese freak

Google your Amazon --starter culture cheeses. Mesophillic is easiest, and mozz is a great place to start as there is no aging. It's super interesting stuff. I used to make all kinds when I had my catering business.

LOL. I know you're out of delivery range. It was the easiest way to show you what I was talking about. Xx

One day I'll be back in the land of Amazon. πŸ€ͺ

Linda Jackson 🌏's avatar

Thank you Joe! It is joyful.

I'm proud of you, too, Linda! I always thought it was tough to make yogurt. In my back to the land days friends would make it, and I'd always be in awe. Well, good going! And your starter looks great!

Thank you Jeanine - I hope you might be inspired to try it when I share the process. You will be surprised how easy it is!
