Thanks for sharing this fascinating info about that part of our incredible earth and culture! I would honour whomever I had to to calm the volcanoes! If the rain water is unsafe to drink, is the air unsafe to breathe?
Technically, yes. Those numbers on the SO2 scale are deemed unsafe, but particularly for those with respiratory issues, which thankfully is not us. But long term exposure to those levels is bad for anyone, much like the smoke that our friends in North America are subject to right now. Eye and throat irritation, and danger for people with respiratory conditions.
I'm coming to realize it's just a constant beat in the background of life here.
At this moment, it's mostly on Ambrym and Ambae that have gas venting and ash plumes, but all the islands here are volcanic, and they all take their turn from time to time.
Thanks Kat! There is so much to know. I feel the same way when I read stories from our nomad friends who travel to India and Africa and Southeast Asia - places I know so little about.
Good sailing policy: Keep the gods happy
Always!
Fascinating but scary! You had me with the title!
Yay! Thanks Claire. That means a lot, I think hard about titles.
Wow very interesting. I didn’t realize there were these many volcanoes in those islands.
How did you get your insets to turn blue like that? At least they are blue on my black screen. Maybe it is just a system setting.
Substack now has a setting for colored text in the post editor. 👍
Cool. I will look for that.

So aascinating how the volcanos tie into the local culture. A little scary too!
I love that part of this culture Fi! So interesting.
Would love to learn more about Vanuatu's traditional culture and knowledge (known as “kastom”). 🤓
Funny you should mention it Erin, I'm doing some digging. 🤓🤓💙
Whoa, Linda! Courting disaster! Pacific Ring of Fire--such a wide wide range. Wishing you fair sailing, amiga.
Thanks Jeanine! I've lived on the Ring for most of my life, but thhis place really brings it up close and personal. 🌋💙
Right. I mean SF is on it, but where you are now seems so different. Hope the ash is dispersing. The Earth-oceans, what lies beneath? Awesome.
Awesome and awe inspiring.
And you are living on it, so very exciting. Front row seat. Is the disturbance affecting most of the chain, Linda?

Wow--this was fascinating. And makes me realize how little I know about the world.

Another great story. Thanks! 💕
Thank you for reading JL. I appreciate it!
I am learning so much from your posts. Such an interesting life you lead.
Thanks Michelle!
Wow, a new vulcan patina for Duende’s exterior!
Gawd, I hope not! 😬
